The pictographic instructions for simple tasks in this piece by Robert Fones - insert the banking card, press the button, deposit the coin - tell us how to engage vast networks of computers, energy, or communications with seemingly no effort, no work. By integrating images of the giant ancient earthworks of the Hopewell people in Ohio, evidence of the economic and aesthetic achievements of this trading culture, Fones reminds us of other ancient networks built, then excavated, by labour.
