William Raphael

Indian Encampment on the Lower St. Lawrence

1879
One of Raphael's most successful works on canvas, this rare nightscape features the encampment of the Montagnais First Nation at Pointe-au-Pic, Murray Bay (now known as La Malbaie), Quebec. The birch-bark teepees and canoes are lit subtly by the glowing firepit and brilliant moonlight. The darkened cliff and the wharf against the night sky result in a dramatic and enigmatic composition.
