Jan van der (called Stradanus) Straet

Hunting Scene

c. 1580-1596
Although Flemish, Stradanus mainly worked in Florence. This drawing relates to the artist’s most ambitious print publication – a set of engravings illustrating various modes of hunting. This study illustrates the hunt of skylarks in which falcons were used to frighten the birds into a trap of twigs coated in sticky lime. The drawings for this series are among the artist’s finest works and one of the highest achievements of late sixteenth-century draftsmanship.
