Henry Sandham

Hunters Returning with their Spoil

1877
A member of the Canadian Society of Artists, Sandham produced historical portrayals of the "disappearing" traditions of the 19th-century, evoking a certain romantic nostalgia. This scene of hunters making their way home on snowshoes appears frozen, like one of the photographs of the day – possibly the influence of the artist's work painting composite backgrounds for the William Notman Photographic Studio in Montreal. Sandham later became a partner at the Notman Studio in Boston.
