Itee Pootoogook

Hudson's Bay Company Warehouse

2009
Category:
Itee Pootoogook works from photographs, yet the results are not highly detailed images as might be expected. Instead, the artist pares down the scene to its minimal forms, which in combination with radical cropping creates a semi-abstracted, geometric composition. In the early to mid 20th century, the Hudson Bay Company post was the main connection Inuit had to the outside world and its manufactured goods. The historic buildings still exist in Cape Dorset, and the artist brings history to the present in his depiction.
