House is a Feeling

2011
Mark Soo investigates notions of perception, modes of representation and considerations of social space. "House is a Feeling" brings the domestic experience of hearing muffled music through a neighbour's wall into the gallery, challenging traditional expectations of the museum as a place of contemplation. Instead, we must search for what he calls "the ground in the figure," an ambiguous situation "created by the interplay of speculation, experience and context when an element of the equation is crucially withheld." Titled after an iconic 1990s dance track - a riff on both the music style and the physicality of the noise - this installation is as much about what is present as what is absent.
