Hot Properties 46

1987, printed 2011
The social and economic conditions related to Vancouver's urban landscape are the subject of Jim Breukelman's photography. Here he presents a taxonomic register of modestly scaled, post-WWII homes built in a style particular to Vancouver. "As a whole," he suggests, "each house and its lot is a one-of-a-kind pocket environment. Looking at the details, you can get a sense of what that person feels about the world outside." Originally shot in 1987 and printed more recently, the title "Hot Properties" references not the simplicity of these homes but rather the extravagant value of the land on which they sit, which has increased exponentially in the decades since the project was first conceived.
