Hollow

1998-1999
Conceived as part of the exhibition "Sleeping Rough", "Hollow" envisions the mythic ideal of nature as provider of the perfect shelter. Moulded from a real tree trunk, the synthetic fabrication maintains the original's organic texture and form, yet as it is lined in industrial foam, offers a sterilized version of the natural that is free from damp, rot, and creepy-crawly cohabitants. Inside, a sleeping bag reminds us that this is someone's dwelling place, albeit a temporary home. The absence of the resident enables us to imagine circumstances that might lead to our own occupation of the hollow trunk.
