Arthur Lismer

Harbour Defence - Winter

c. 1918-1919
This winter scene captures Halifax’s defence against the threat of German submarines that lurked at the mouth of the harbour. This lithograph is a prime example of Lismer’s skill at harnessing the drama of the scene by positioning two lone figures of the guards against a vast sky.
