Harold Gilman

Halifax Harbour

1918
Gilman replaced the site of the maritime catastrophe with a glowing landscape to create a tranquil setting. This monumental canvas presented a painterly challenge that Gilman tackled with precision. The carefully calibrated colours and exacting patterns show his engagement with French Post- and Neo-Impressionist painters. The sky’s rhythmic pattern and crisp green hills in the foreground further accentuate the artist’s desire to embed the dazzle ships and industrial factory buildings within the maritime landscape.
