Guardian Angel

c. 1745-1765
These figures came from the original decoration of the cloister of the Ursuline convent in Vienna, which included niches with painted life-size figures of saints and scenes of the Passion set against a painted landscape. Executed by various hands, here the brightly coloured surface polychromy and the flower motif on the robe of the angel suggest a Spanish or Portuguese sculptor rather than a local artisan.
