Jean Arp and his wife, the painter and dancer Sophie Taeuber-Arp, expressed the goal of their artmaking: We do not want to imitate nature; we do not want to copy; we want to create. We want to create as the plant creates its fruit; we don’t want to copy. We want to create in an immediate way. As no trace of abstraction exists in the art, we call it concrete art.
