Group of Houses with Trees

The draughtsman and etcher Jan de Bisschop primarily drew landscapes, a genre that was the focus of the small drawing academy he founded in The Hague. De Bisschop’s brush and wash technique in these drawings produces a strong chiaroscuro effect that is enhanced by the use of a warm, golden-brown ink, named “bisschops-inkt” after the artist himself. He presumably mixed Indian ink with a bit of copper red to obtain this characteristic and charming colour.
