Frances Loring

Grief

1918, cast 1965
In this symbolist sculpture, Loring uses the human figure to convey an idea or emotion. The woman mourns, possibly grieving the losses of the First World War. Stylistically, the artist was influenced by modernist sculptor Auguste Rodin. This is apparent in the unfinished treatment of the base from which the figure appears to emerge as though she were a part of the earth.
