Graveyard Entrance, Campbell River

Painted after a trip to Gitxsan and Kwakwaka'wakw territory shortly after her return from France, this work is one of Carr’s major early canvases of First Nations subjects. Completed in a sombre, earthy palette with highly expressive brushwork, the painting marks a rejection of her previous production from San Francisco and England. The composition, with its dramatic perspective, emphasizes the thunderbird marking the entrance to the graveyard.
