Gathering Seaweed

2013
Category:
Qalupiluit are legendary Inuit sea creatures, often evoked to teach children to stay close to camp and off open ice, as this is where Qalupiluit like to hunt. In this work Tim Pitsiulak contemporizes the story by depicting the child with sneakers and jeans, reminding us that Qalupiluit have enduring relevance as both a teaching tool and conduit for cultural knowledge. The composition reinforces the narrative – the focus is on the tangle of Qalupiluit and their hunger, rather than on the child. This narrative strategy emphasizes the importance of cyclical knowledge – the synthesis of traditional and contemporary lives.
