Eberhard Havekost

Gast 6, B10

2010
Eberhard Havekost’s work explores the act and relevancy of painting within today’s image-obsessed culture. His productions are often based on photographs that he edits digitally before creating his renditions in oil. Gast 6, B10 is one of a series of recent canvases depicting Cypress trees in a snowy forest at night. The German artist shot a sequence of photographs of the trees illuminated only by the camera’s flash. In his painting of the scene the artist carefully replicated and dramatized this light source on the tree while otherwise omitting much of the photographic detail. The result is a moody gestural work that hovers between representation and abstract forms. In the words of the artist: “I offer a proposal to the viewer: a way to think in visual processes.” Eberhard Havekost’s work explores the act and relevancy of painting within today’s image-obsessed culture.
