Simon de Vlieger

Forest Scene

c. 1630-1653
Best known for his marine subjects, Simon de Vlieger was also a distinguished landscape artist. The dense appearance of this drawing indicates that he worked on location, overwhelmed by the abundance of nature. The blue paper may have been chosen to suggest a dramatic, sombre mood. Drawings of this type were not intended as preparatory to paintings but rather as private exercises.
