Jock Macdonald

Far Off Drums

1960
First exhibited in Toronto in 1960, this painting relies on drawing for its structure, with thinly painted areas of colour that augment the role of the bare canvas. Macdonald was a significant figure in the development of abstract art in Canada. He found inspiration in the Western landscape and spirituality. An influential teacher, he was also a member of Painters Eleven, Toronto’s first abstract art society.
