Fantastic Head in Profile

c. 1742-1757
The present sheet is one of a larger group of imaginary head studies. These delicate character studies were the product of Giambattista's fascination with the infinite expressive possibilities inherent in the human face, and attest to his ability to suggest depth of character and beauty of form with the most minimal of means. Constructed only of roughly scratched outlines and a few splashes of ink wash, the fantasy heads were simply private drawing exercises unconnected with the artist's paintings.
