Johann Carl Loth

Eve Tempting Adam

c. 1655-1698
Loth was first taught in Munich by his father, court painter to the Dukes of Bavaria. And like his father before him, Loth travelled to Italy to study. In 1656 he settled in Venice, where he remained for the rest of his life. Loth here re-interprets sixteenth-century Venetian painting, adapting it to contemporary taste. The tight composition concentrates our attention: Eve, alive with desire after having eaten the fruit, seduces a resisting Adam.
