Jimmie Durham is interested in the potential of art to challenge dominant narratives, conventions and traditions. Since relocating to Europe in the early 1990s, he has created many artworks that seek to “liberate” stone. Encore tranquillité was created in the summer of 2008 in a Russian airfield outside of Berlin. When the stone was lowered on the handbuilt German airplane, the plane split in two (the original stone, weighing several tons, has been replaced by a lighter, fibreglass exhibition copy). This jarring act humorously upends the supposed hierarchy between the two objects: the technologically superior plane is now the victim of a simple stone.
