David B. Milne

Easel

1935
Milne often chose simple everyday subjects for his art, imbuing them with a greater significance. This canvas depicts the interior of his studio, showing the tools with which he worked, including the paint tins on the shelves and his easel. The artist here introduces subtle indications of his own presence – a painterly device that is also apparent in some of his other works.
