Edwin Holgate

Early Autumn

1938
In contrast with other nude works, Holgate’s model, Madeleine Rocheleau, is truly in harmony with the landscape around her – almost to the point of integrating into the foliage completely. The artist consciously echoes similar tones in her skin, the wood and the stone. The work highlights a notion observed in European figurative studies of this period relating to the relationship between man and woman, culture and nature.
