Michael Merrill's drawings and paintings often examine the spaces in which art is created, exhibited and contextualized: studios, galleries, sites of public sculpture. His "Ducts" offer an artistic record of a recent expansion at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, yet these works on paper can also be read as drawing experiments. Each represent three takes on the same scene. He describes his process: "I used only black ink, completely soaking the paper while working horizontally. I drew without preliminary drawings as the water and ink followed their own agendas - a process that began chaotically but slowly became easier to control as the paper dried."
