James Wilson Morrice

Dieppe

c. 1906
Morrice visited Dieppe on a number of occasions. The leisure activities offered at this seaside resort town, a favourite subject of the artist, attracted many wealthy Parisians. The related pochade shows the changes made by the artist in the final canvas – notably the deepening perspective and refining of details. In December 1914 Morrice donated this canvas to the Canadian Patriotic Fund for an exhibition organized by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts to raise money for the war effort.
