Theodore Lane

Dido in Despair

3 April 1821
Lane's parody of Gillray's earlier image puts Queen Caroline in the place of Lady Hamilton as the mythical heroine. Littered about the Queen are tokens from admirers and lovers such as Matthew Wood and Bartolommeo Bergami. The print was issued at the peak of controversies surrounding the Queen's reputation and position.
