Henry A.C. Jackson's mushroom paintings uniquely combine artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. Jackson, the older brother of Alexander (A.Y.), was a commercial lithographer by profession, who first took an interest in fungi on birdwatching expeditions in Montreal's parks. Drawn to the interesting shapes and colours of the higher fungi, he began collecting samples, taking notes, and sketching them, rendering exquisitely detailed, life-size pencil drawings, and later, watercolour paintings. As he became known in the scientific community, Jackson was asked by the renowned mycologist René Pomerleau to illustrate his book, "Mushrooms of Eastern Canada and the United States."
