Orlando Parentini

Decorative Study for the Apartment of Pope Pius IV in the Vatican

c. 1559-1565
This unique sheet served as a design in an important papal commission of the Cinquecento: the decoration of the Vatican apartment of Pope Pius IV (Giovanni Angelo Medici) in the Belvedere Palace. Considering the rather nebulous career of painter Orlando Parentini, the recent discovery of the drawing - the first attributed with near absolute certainty to the artist - represents a significant addition to scholarship on decorative projects at the Vatican. Although somewhat obscure, the visual program of the apartment of Pius IV, known as the Sala del Buon Governo, endeavoured to represent the Pope as a firm but honest Christian ruler, as shown by the detail on the sheet of the seated figure of Concordia at the right.
