Jules Olitski

DD

1968
With his monumental works, Olitski aimed to record a “cloud of colour that remains there transfixed.” He used an industrial spray gun to create a delicate mist of bright and shifting hues of colour. The high-keyed yellow palette evokes the atmospheric effect of sunlight, a notion reinforced by the long horizontal shape of the canvas. Monochrome at first glance, the painting’s subtle variations of colour convey a profound luminescence interrupted only by the spontaneous strokes of solid colour brushed along its edges.
