Giovanni Battista Foggini
Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany
c. 1715-1720
Foggini was the foremost sculptor in Florence. Cosimo III appointed him First Sculptor in 1687, and eventually Foggini became responsible for all the artistic activity at the Medici court. Foggini sculpted Cosimo several times over a period of thirty-five years. This bust dates close to Cosimo's death in 1723, and is remarkable for the expressive realism of the sitter's aging features.
