Jock Macdonald

Coral Fantasy

1958
Macdonald was deeply interested in Surrealism, in particular a sense that the subconscious was the source of an artist’s inspiration. He practised the Surrealist technique of automatic painting, in which he worked spontaneously. With this work, he used a new acrylic binding medium called Lucite 44, which helped make the paint more fluid, enhancing the flowing organic imagery.
