Andrea Carlson

Cook Thief Wife Lover

2010
Category:
In this drawing series, Carlson replicates text and images from cannibal boom films of the 1970s and 1980s (a genre rich in cultural appropriation), museum artifacts and other valuable objects. The cult horror films demonstrate how other cultures are imagined, fictionalized and represented back to the mainstream. A common storyline involves anthropologists from “civilized” societies encountering Indigenous people, only to enact horrifying atrocities upon these groups, thereby reversing assumptions as to the identity of the savages. For Carlson, the collecting practices of ethnographic museums are themselves a form of “cultural cannibalism.”
