Carl Andre
Caiman
1980
The caiman is a crocodile-like animal that inhabits bodies of fresh water in Central and South America. Some species are reclusive and timid, spending much of their day hiding in burrows. Carl Andre makes reference to these traits by placing his sculpture along the junction of the wall and floor, its grey modular units visible only upon close scrutiny. Part of our pleasure in Andre's "Caiman" comes from discovering its discreet presence.
