Tom Thomson

Burnt Land

1915
By manipulating various formal elements, Thomson created a painting that varies drastically from his sketch Burnt Country, Evening. Here, the sky and hill are reduced to flat planes of colour, while the complex tracery of trees is similarly simplified to highlight the silhouette of the hill. The tight, organized design conveys a sense of emptiness following the purging effects of a wildfire.
