Boys Studying Talmud, Orthodox Jewish School, Uzhorod

1938
Category:
This image captures the children's relationship to one another as they read under the watchful guidance of their teacher. In the far right, a young boy presses his face against the window pane, staring with intent curiosity into the classroom. Located between present-day Hungary and Poland, Munkacs, where this photograph was taken, was home to a thriving Jewish community up until 1944, when the city was pronounced Judenrein, or cleansed of Jews. In this context, the image becomes a poignant and painful record of history.
