Boy with Bread

1892-1899
In the late 19th-century, children's portraits, which were commonly commissioned in England, became more prevalent in Canada. These portraits share some similar compositional elements. The young sitter may be positioned slightly off-centre and at an angle with their head facing forward. Often, the subject is holding a prop such as a book or is engaged in an intimate moment with a family member to convey themes of innocence, playfulness and the imagination.
