Marcel Duchamp
Box in a Valise from or by Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Sélavy
1941-1959
Duchamp conceived this readymade in 1941 as a "portable museum" of his oeuvre. The valise contains miniature replicas, photographs, colour reproductions of his works, as well as one "original" drawing. Among these items is a tiny model of the urinal, one of his most important works. Carefully crafted, this small box unfolds like an elaborate puzzle as it discloses connections to works that he made over a period of some three decades.
