William Raphael

Bonsecours Market, Montreal

1880
This bustling cityscape is among Raphael’s masterworks from his mature period. Unlike those of his contemporary Cornelius Krieghoff, his paintings show Canada rapidly urbanizing in the 19th century. After Raphael settled in Montreal, he became involved in the founding of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and, later, the National Gallery of Canada.
