Body of Land

2002-2010
Category:
One of Faye HeavyShield's best-known works, "body of land" comprises an ongoing archive of more than 400 "portraits" made from close-up colour photographs of human skin. Installed by the artist in different configurations that respond to the specific dimensions of the space exhibited, the sprawling sculptural project equates a conception of the body with a view of the land, specifically the topography of southern Alberta which, as HeavyShield posits, "is as specific and varied as the Blackfoot language: prairie, buttes, coulees, river valleys, foothills and mountains and not the least, the Genius loci, the spirit of place - all this was and is familiar to the Kainai."
