Blessing Christ

c. 1500
Inspired by contemporary portraits, paintings showing Jesus up close offered viewers intimacy, making them powerful aids to devotion. This likeness is based on the “Letter of Lentulus,” then thought to be an eye-witness description of Jesus’ physical appearance and character. This is one of many comparable images by Bellini and other artists: repetition and dissemination made these works all the more valued – effectively confirming the belief that they were authentic likenesses.
