Blessing Christ

c. 1500
Christ, with hand raised in blessing, is a commanding presence. The new shoot growing from the tree stump symbolizes his resurrection. Encouraging viewers to identify with the subject, the landscape evokes the mainland around Venice – the divine present in the familiar. The artist copied the work of Bellini, the leading painter in that city. For many, originality was less important than a powerful image referencing to other, well-known works.
