Behind the Capitol, Rome

before 1929
This unusual view turns its back on the ancient ruins in the Roman Forum to focus on the rear of the Campidoglio. The Palazzo dei Senatori is recognizable from behind by its belltower (added in 1578-82 by Martino Longhi the Elder) and by the Tabularium, the arcaded archives of ancient Rome (built in 78 B.C.) that forms its base. On the left of the scene, cast in shadows, is the side of the Arch of Septimius Severus (203); on the right is a corner of the façade of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami (1598).
