Camille Corot

Auvers – Sloping Road

1865
The broken brushwork and its rapid execution are characteristic of the studies that Corot learned to paint as a student in the 1820s. A striking feature is the choice of viewing angle, which lends a note of spontaneity to the scene. The painting’s support was formerly inscribed with the date of 18 February 1865, when Corot was in Auvers visiting his friend Charles-François Daubigny, the landscape painter.
