Rita Letendre

Atara

1963
Category:
Letendre painted this during a stay in Israel. The title refers a popular meeting place for Tel Aviv artists. The artist exhibited with the Automatistes in the 1950s, but by the early 1960s her work became, in her own words, "more passionate, more agitated, more tragic.” She said her use of striking contrasts between bright, warm colours and stark blacks has its source in her Abenaki identity.
