Arctic Landscape (River with Pebble Beach)

Janet Kigusiuq was first known for her prints, but after the Baker Lake print shop closed in 1990, she continued to make drawings as a means in themselves rather than as images to be translated into stonecut, linocut, or stencil. Her work took a new direction with a focus on richly layered areas of colour over her previous emphasis on line. Here the artist has scratched out the top layer of colour to show the one beneath, illustrating her interest in texture. This subject matter is also unusual as the land has not been a dominant subject in Inuit art, particularly in drawings by first-generation artists.
