Since most of his oeuvre is lost, little is known about the painter Felipe Gómez de Valencia, other than that he worked in Granada in a style derived from Alonso Cano. The drawing is signed " P. Gz " (the P being from Phillipus, the Latinized spelling of his name) and inscribed " Para Simon del Nancy " (for Simon del Nancy). This dedication suggests the drawing was given as a gift to a friend or patron, but as yet del Nancy has not been identified.
