Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

An Oriental Warrior

c. 1750-1755
This generic type of figure occurs frequently in Giambattista's heavily populated historical paintings. The model himself is not necessarily oriental, but was inspired by the rich mix of people commonly encountered in the multicultural city of Venice. The figure is, in fact, incidental to the drawing, which is a study of the way fabric falls and drapes on the human body.
