Sorel Cohen

An Extended and Continuous Metaphor, No. 6

1983, printed 2020
Cohen presents herself simultaneously as model, painter and photographer, upsetting traditionally gendered roles within artistic production. The female body, usually the object of the artist's, the viewer's, and the art historian's gaze, is here reclaimed as a moving, active agent. The artist describes the work as a reflection on the nature of creative experience: "I am my own objectifier, my own object, my own subject, as well as spectator and audience of my own actions. [This work] represent[s] the condition whereby gesture and object are fused."
