George Cruikshank

Ah! Sure Such a Pair ...

23 June 1820
The ascension to the throne of the Prince Regent as George IV renewed concerns about the reputation of his estranged wife. On 6 June 1820, the new King delivered to Parliament two green bags containing evidence against the Queen. The review of a Secret Committee encouraged a royal divorce, urged that Caroline be tried for adultery and deprived of her royal title, recommendations that never came to pass. If the King had a green bag, it was suggested, the Queen might have one too.
